Option 1 EdD Requirements

Required Coursework Option 1

Our program will prepare you to be a science education leader in the K-12 setting or to be a university science educator through approximately equal components of education and science with supporting work in additional science fields.

Option1 requires 90 graduate hours distributed in the following manner:

Science – 30 hours in two or more fields. You will select a science major field of study from:

Science Education – 18 hours. 

  • Science 690 (Sci 690) – Workshop in Science Education
  • Science 692 (Sci 692)– Topics in the History and Nature of Science
  • Science 695 (Sci 695) – Advanced Teaching Methods in Science 
  • Science 696 (Sci696) - Current Issues in Science Education
  • Science 790 (Sci 790) - Internship in Science Education
  • Science XXX – Science courses may be repeated for additional credit of 3 hours

Research Methodologies – 17 hours. These courses consist of Design, Quantitative, Qualitative and Advanced courses.

Required:

  • Science 699 (Sci 699) – Research Methodology in Science Education
  • Educational Psych 641 (EdPsy 641) – Statistical methods in Educational and Psychological Research
  • Education Curriculum 650 (EdCur 650) – Introduction to Qualitative Research
  • ID 705 - Research Colloquium

Choose 2 from:

  • Education Curriculum 660 (EdCur 660) – Ethnographic Research in Education
  • Education Curriculum 735 (EdCur 735) – Analysis and Application of Research on Teaching
  • Education Psych 640 (EdPsy 640)– Methodology of Educational and Psychological Research
  • Education Psych 642 (EdPsy 642)– Intermediate Statistics
  • Education Psych 741(EdPsy 741) – Applied Regression Analysis for the Social Sciences
  • Education Psych 742 (EdPsy 742) – Multivariate Statistical Techniques
  • Education Psych 743 (EdPsy 743) – Introduction to Factor Analysis

Education -15 hours. These consist of Cognitive Science, Educational Psychology, Adult Education, Curriculum, and Philosophy courses.

Required:

  • Education Curriculum 601 (EdCur 601) – Principles and procedures of Curriculum Development
  • Education Foundation 631 (EdFon 631) – Philosophy of Education
  • Education Foundation 641 (EdFon 641) – History of American Education

Choose 2 from:

  • Education Psych 606 (EdPsy 606) – Behavior Analysis in Education

  • Psy Science 616 (PsySc 616) – Perception and Cognition
  • Psy Science 618 (PsySc 618) – Thinking

Dissertation/Record of Study Research – 10 hours .  Focus: Science Education

Completion deadline

  • You must complete the program within seven years of when you began it.

Program approval

  • Full-time students must receive advisor approval by the end of the first year of study

  • Part-time students must receive advisor approval by the end of the second year of study
