The road to educational leadership—whether at the building or school corporation level—usually begins with a job in teaching, so it should come as no surprise that Teachers College is ready to open the door to a variety of leadership roles, such as principal, superintendent, and administrator. Preparing these types of leaders is the primary focus of Ball State’s nationally recognized Department of Educational Leadership.
Whatever direction you wish to head, our department has a flexible program that can lead the way. Those interested in building-level leadership may choose a master’s level program that leads to an Indiana license as a school principal. Intrigued by charter schools? So is Ball State, and its expertise translates into a certificate program in charter school leadership.
Those aspiring to superintendency will find a specialist program within the department, and doctoral students can also design a program that will culminate in superintendent licensure.
This wouldn’t be Ball State without substantial experiential learning and connections to the world off-campus. Administrative licensure requires an internship experience, and many of our programs culminate in two semesters of hands-on administrative experience. We are also strongly connected to the front lines of education through our school study councils, which tackle regional education issues and problems, spread effective educational practices, and engage local school leaders in improving student performance. Our faculty have close ties to the types of institutions their graduates serve, in many cases having worked in educational leadership as part of their distinguished careers, and frequently serving as consultants to school boards and superintendents, state education departments, and other educational leaders.
