EDAD 694 Building-Level Internship

EDAD 694 serves as a critical benchmark for decisions about administrative licensure. The EDAD 694 internship requires two semesters of active participation in the process of school administration for participants. Graduate students nearing the end of their coursework can refer to this brochure as they plan for their internship experience. Administrative internships culminate the Indiana licensure programming for the K-12 building-level license. The internship is a hands-on, practical experience that affords students the opportunity to put into practice the knowledge, dispositions, and performances that have been explored during their coursework.
An internship provides students the opportunity to hone and demonstrate their talents as they engage in educational leadership. The success that students enjoy during their internship can lead to positive recommendations for future employment as a school administrator. A wide range of activities is provided to ensure orientation to the K-12 spectrum of educational administration. Specialized and in-depth projects are also included to provide for the participant's special needs and specific interests. Personal reflection, organization of activities and self-assessment are also important components of the internship experience.
Below are frequently asked questions and answers about the building-level, administrative internship.
1. What courses must be taken prior to the internship?
Early in their program, students should contact the department's advisor, Allison Logan firstname.lastname@example.org or 765/285-7748 to plan a program of studies. The internship is to be taken at the very end of your program of studies. Students must receive prior approval before they can register for EDAD 694, the building-level internship. To meet the prerequisite for the internship, students must have successfully completed 5 of these 7 courses: EDAD 600, EDAD 635, EDAD 630, EDAD 686, EDAD 684, EDAD 689, and EDSUP 650. It is highly recommended that you take EDAD 635 and EDAD 689 prior to the internship.
2. How far in advance should I make arrangements to begin my internship?
The required internship orientation sessions are held the semester before students begin their internship. Therefore, contacts must be made early. For example, if a student plans to begin his/her internship during the fall semester, s/he should begin the process no later than April 15. Students who plan to begin their internship during a spring semester should begin the process no later than October 15.
3. What do I need to do to register for the internship?
a. If you meet the prerequisites cited above, contact the intern director, Lynn Lehman via email to request permission to register.
b. Upon being given approval to register, the student will be granted access to the Internships for School Leadership Community which serves as the access point for course materials. Directions and time-lines will be included.
4. How much time will be required for the internship?
Interns should plan at least eight (8) to ten (10) hours of contact time per week for the "on-level "semester enrolled in the program. When a student serves an internship is his/her own school or grade levels of teaching experience, this is considered an "on-level" semester. A minimum of thirty-eight (38) hours of contact time is required during the "off-level" internship semester. An "off-level" semester internship would be served in another building at other grade levels. For example, a high school English teacher would serve an "on-level" semester at the high school. The "off-level" internship would be in an elementary setting. Contact time consists of: time on-site with the field supervisor, project preparation and implementation, seminars, journaling, and other participation requirements.
5. Where can I do my internship?
Most interns complete their "on-level" semester in their own schools and their off-level at a nearby school in their district. It is strongly recommended that intern experiences span as much of the total K-12 grade setting as possible, because students are earning a principal's license that covers grades K-12. Interns are required to complete the ELCC Standard II project during the off-level experience.
6. Will I be able to continue teaching while I take the internship?
Yes, the majority of students do work full-time while completing the internship. This presents challenging time management issues. Students may want to plan to begin their internship during a semester when they have no extracurricular assignments, when they have a student teacher assigned to them, or when they can arrange their teaching schedules to include blocks of flexible time during the day.
7. Can I take other courses while doing the internship?
Former students and BSU supervisors highly recommend that students do not take other courses during their internship. The internship is very time consuming. At most, students should schedule only one other course during an internship semester.
8. What kinds of work will I be doing?
Requirements for the internship include three major leadership projects each semester, monthly journals, reflective essays, discussion boards, and other leadership experiences that you will gain at the school. Each internship project centers upon an ELCC standard. Building-level interns must complete a Standard 1 project during their on-level semester and a comprehensive Standard 2 project during their off-level internship. You also must attend an orientation seminar on campus as you begin your internship, and a regional seminar toward the end of each of the two semesters.
9. How is a supervisor assigned to me for the internship?
A Ball State University supervisor will be assigned to you. It is your responsibility to make arrangements for a field supervisor (a principal or assistant principal) to work with you at your internship school. You should approach that person about being your field supervisor as soon as you have received the information packet and have reviewed the field supervisor's duties listed therein.
