About Our Department

The mission of the Department of Elementary Education is to provide preservice and inservice teacher education, service to the community and profession, and scholarly contributions to the field.

In carrying out this mission, the department has been widely recognized for excellence in its work. We center our work around Ball State’s Conceptual Framework of Expertise, Engagement, and Context for professional preparation. The organization of departmental faculty and staff centers on the key focus areas of elementary education, early childhood education, and reading education.

We value:

  • Broad, authentic experiences with teaching and learning in a variety of diverse settings; the development of content knowledge, professional knowledge, effective communication skills, abilities in decision making, teaching abilities, and respect for the complex nature of human relationships in teaching and learning.
  • A learning environment that encourages inquiry, critical thinking, problem solving, reflection and life-long learning.
