We have paths ready to lead you to a rewarding career as a special education teacher, administrator, curriculum developer, or researcher. And if you’re already a teacher, special ed or otherwise, you’ll be able to advance your knowledge about serving special-needs students.
To enter the field as a licensed teacher of special education, consider one of our bachelor’s degrees:
You also may pursue a dual major elementary education with special education for those needing mild interventions. We also offer a minor in special education for the hearing impaired, tailored specifically for students majoring in speech pathology and audiology.
Our two master’s degrees include Special Education and Applied Behavior Analysis with an Emphasis in Autism. Additionally, we offer a variety of graduate certificate and licensure programs, including an administrative Director of Exceptional Needs program.
Our doctoral degrees are for students interested in research-focused careers as well as those seeking leadership roles such as teacher educator, special education manager, or curriculum specialist.
Ball State takes an entrepreneurial approach to education through immersive learning, in which students from different majors team up to solve a problem for a business or community partner. Projects have taken our students as far as Liverpool, England, to create a DVD documentary about two schools there and been as close as neighboring Indiana counties to develop resources and tools to improve community preparedness to help children through disasters.
Students in Ball State’s Department of Special Education have access to a wealth of support services to ease their access into school and help further their careers. The Office of Teacher Education Services helps students prepare for and obtain licensure. Many of our students benefit from scholarships and financial aid. Student organizations offer rich opportunities to hone skills, advance knowledge, get to know others with similar interests, and be ready upon graduation for life after Ball State.
