Certificate in Autism

This program is designed to serve teachers, psychologists, and other human service professionals throughout the nation who deal with various issues related to autism. This program also is designed to meet the needs of part-time students, full-time students, currently employed professionals, non-traditional students, and career-changers, among others. Students can take the number of courses they feel is appropriate given their personal situation and ability to handle the coursework. Some students will take only one or two courses per semester, while others may be working full-time toward completing the certificate.

Participating students will be expected to complete a total of 15 semester hours to earn this certificate. The certificate requires completion of five specific courses, one of which is a three credit-hour practicum. The program will take approximately six months to one year for full-time students to complete and is delivered entirely online. The primary objectives of this program focuses on students acquiring competencies in the following areas of autism:

  • Gain knowledge and understanding of autism spectrum disorders;
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop, implement, and monitor behavioral programs with individuals with autism spectrum disorders;
  • Demonstrate the ability to conduct functional behavioral assessments within a variety of settings;
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills in implementing interventions and treatments specific to individuals with autism spectrum disorders; and
  • Complete a supervised field-based practicum with the goal of demonstrating their skills in developing and implementing a variety of interventions
