What are the graduation requirements?

To graduate with a master’s degree, you must have at least a 3.0 GPA, 30 credit hours (maximum of 9 transfer credits), complete all coursework with a C or better (unless higher grade required for a particular course), and submit a graduation application by the deadline.

Is a thesis required?

No, a thesis is not required.

Advising

Who is my advisor?

You may contact Bonnie Krupa, Beth Hawke, or Amy Chamberlain for advising.

How do I register?

The Online and Distance Education Student Services website provides helpful information regarding registration, tuition, important dates, and more.

How quickly can I graduate?

Typically, students take one or two classes each semester.  That means you could complete a master’s degree in less than two years.  Certificate programs could be completed in less than one year.  Students interested in taking more than two classes per term should consult an advisor.  Certificate programs must be completed in five years or less.  Master’s programs must be completed in six years or less.  Summer courses are only ten weeks and are taught at an accelerated, more intense pace.

Can I take a break?

Your status can be reactivated by your advisor if your break is less than one year.  If your break is longer than one year, you must reapply through the graduate school.

Can I use financial aid if I qualify?

Financial aid can be used for master’s degrees. It cannot be used if you are only pursuing a certificate.

How do I apply for graduation? When?

You will need to submit an application for graduation for each degree and/or certificate. You may apply as soon as you register for your final semester.  The deadline is early in your final semester.

Certificates

How do I officially add a certificate?

You must declare the certificate by submitting an application to the graduate school.   Certificates must be added prior to your final semester.

Can I transfer previous coursework from another institution?

Transfer courses cannot be accepted in certificate programs.

Can I use the same courses towards the ABA and Autism Certificates?

Students are not permitted to use the same courses towards two different certificates.  If you would like to pursue both certificates, your advisor will help identify the courses you can take to earn both.

Is there an application deadline?

  • Fall:  July 10
  • Spring:  November 15
  • Summer:  April 15

Master’s Degrees

Can I transfer previous coursework?

You can submit a course evaluation request to our curriculum specialist, along with a course syllabus.   If pursuing the MA in ABA degree, please also submit the BACB course content verification form from your previous institution.  The grade for the course must be a B or better, and all work must be completed within the limit of six years allowed to complete a master’s degree at Ball State.  As many as 9 hours can be used towards a degree, if approved.  The research course must be taken at Ball State.

Field Based Experience Courses

BCBA

What courses are required to sit for the BCBA exam?

You will need SPCE 609, 611, 610, 619, 689, and 691.  These courses complete the content hour requirement for the Fourth Edition Task List.  You can earn the certificate in ABA by completing the first 5 courses.  To complete a master’s degree in ABA, you’ll add one field based experience course (638 or 683), 636, 680, and 682.  Or, you could take SPCE 636 and three electives to complete the coursework required for the MA in Special Education.

What other requirements are necessary to become a BCBA?

You must have a master’s degree in a BACB approved field and complete 1500 independent fieldwork hours supervised by a BCBA.  Fieldwork hours must be a minimum of 10 hours per week and a maximum of 30 hours per week.  More than 30 hours a week cannot be counted towards your total.  You must be supervised at least once every 2 weeks for 5% of the total hours spent in experience.  For example, 20 hours of experience would include at least 1 supervised hour.

How do I find a fieldwork supervisor?

You are responsible for finding an appropriate supervisor.  If it is difficult to find a supervisor in your area, there are companies that provide online supervision.  The supervisor must not be a relative, subordinate, or employee during the experience period.  You may be asked to compensate your supervisor for his or her time.  This is common, acceptable and not considered an employer/employee relationship.

When can I start my field experience hours?

You may begin to accumulate your fieldwork hours the first day of SPCE 609 provided you and your supervisor have registered and completed the online supervision and experience training module.

Does the practicum count as BCBA supervised experience?

You can count 10-30 hour per week from your field based experience course towards your total supervised independent fieldwork hours (1500 total required) as long as it is supervised by a BCBA.  Our field based experience course does not qualify as a BCBA approved practicum or intensive practicum program.
