Miki Hamstra became the Director of the Center for Gifted Studies and Talent Development in 2013. She earned a gifted and talented/high abilities license from Ball State University and also holds an MA in English (Indiana University, Summa Cum Laude), an MA in international relations (Boston University, Summa Cum Laude), and a BA in English, French, and education (Butler University, Summa Cum Laude). Her awards include the Indiana Center for Intercultural Communication Award (Indiana University, 2006 and 2010), and the inaugural Carlos Montoya 9/11 Award for Excellence in International Relations (Boston University, 2001). Before coming to Ball State, she taught middle school and college students for over thirteen years in public, private, international, and online educational settings with an emphasis on humanities, writing, and Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). She is a published researcher and has presented at national and regional conferences including the Indiana Association for the Gifted (IAG), Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE), and Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). She is a certified Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted (SENG) Model Parent Group Facilitator and works with parents of gifted children throughout the state of Indiana. She coaches a Future Problem Solver team at Burris Laboratory School and provides several year-long, after-school enrichment activities as well as week-long camp opportunities during spring, summer, and fall breaks in select districts. She currently serves as the Vice President of the Indiana Association for the Gifted.
