Maria Hernández Finch earned her doctorate in 2002. At Ball State, she is the director of the Educational Specialist (EdS) and Masters (MA) Programs in School Psychology. She also coordinates the practica experiences for the school psychology EdS and Doctoral programs and is the faculty advisor for the BSU chapter of APA Division 16’s Student Affiliates in School Psychology (SASP). Hernández Finch teaches many applied courses in school psychology including School Practicum and Practicum Consultation. She also periodically teaches immersive development courses in the community and online human development.

Hernández Finch has a very active program of research and always seeks to involve her Doctoral and EdS students in all phases of the research process. Currently, she researches the intersection of diversity with assessment, prevention efforts, and consultation. She is particularly interested in the young learner and current research efforts with this population include gifted/high ability, diverse early learners and the impact of parental education/income on assessment with the young learner. Her long-term research goal is that her work would contribute to equitable and culturally relevant assessment, Response to Intervention (RtI), and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) practices. She is a research affiliate with the Ball State Autism and Applied Behavior Analysis Center and is currently working on research for a transition to work program, ASDachieve.

Hernández Finch welcomes inquiries regarding the MA/EdS programs in school psychology, BSU’s APA Division 16 SASP chapter, her research, ASDachieve, or inquiries from community members interested in partnering with the programs in school psychology.
