Teachers College Professor to Receive Excellence in Teaching Award

Lynn Staley, Department of Elementary Education, has been named a recipient of a 2011 Excellence in Teaching Award.

The Excellence in Teaching Award, which recognizes faculty dedication and talent in the classroom, is coordinated by the Innovation in Teaching, Assessment, and Scholarship office. It provides each recipient with a plaque, recognition at the Fall Faculty Meeting, a stipend paid into the recipient's base salary, an additional honorarium, resources and assigned time to develop the dream course, and an opportunity to teach the course.

Staley’s dream course is titled Education for Local/Global Citizenship (ELGC). “Promoting citizenship in the PK-6 curriculum is no longer an option,” Staley said. “If we want to promote social responsibility, we must start early. ELGC is an essential component of the 21st Century Skills needed by our children today to prepare them for tomorrow.” Her course will combine theory and practice as university students explore the fundamentals of ELGC and then apply that knowledge by facilitating service projects in both a local Professional Development School and a school in Makutano, Kenya. The final outcome is to empower children for advocacy.
