Faculty Awards

GILBERT PARK, associate professor of Social Foundations and Multicultural Education in the Department of Educational Studies, is a 2014-15 Fulbright Scholar to South Korea. With the assistance of researchers and educators at Kongju National University, Park will conduct a qualitative research project on the school experiences of multicultural students in South Korean public schools.

LARRY GERSTEIN, professor of psychology-counseling in the Department of Counseling Psychology and Guidance Services, is a 2014 Fulbright U.S. Scholar. Dr. Gerstein will teach Cross-Cultural Counseling and Brief Solution Focused Counseling at Chinese University and the City University of Hong Kong from January — June.  He will also offer lectures to other universities and the community, and conduct research with his current collaborators at Chinese University and the City University of Hong Kong. Dr. Gerstein is the George and Frances Ball Distinguished Professor of Psychology-Counseling, Director of Doctoral Training, and Director of the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies.

JOHN AMBROSIO, assistant professor in the Department of Educational Studies, has been selected to receive a Core Fulbright Scholar Award to South Africa. His work at the University of the Free State in South Africa will involve conceptualizing, designing and implementing a compulsory module, Foundations of Social Justice Education, for undergraduate preservice teachers. He will also mentor less experienced researchers in preparing and publishing manuscripts in scholarly professional journals. Ambrosio will also conduct a research project that investigates the issue of white teachers and professionalism, of how the professionalism of white teachers is affected by their racial formation and identity, and the implications for both white and black students.

SHERON FRASER-BURGESS, associate professor in the Department of Educational Studies, has been appointed a Poynter Center Fellow for fall semester, 2013. Her sabbatical project (conceiving and implementing an ethics center at Ball State) has been deemed as "an excellent fit to the Poynter Center's focus on interdisciplinary approaches to enhancing ethics education." Dr. Fraser-Burgess will have office space in the Poynter Center and access to Indiana University resources. The Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American institutions is an endowed ethics research center located in the heart of the IU-Bloomington campus. 

John EllisJOHN ELLIS
Department of Educational Leadership

John Ellis, assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, recently received the Outstanding Educator of the Year Award from the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents (IAPSS). Dr. Ellis was recognized at the IAPSS Annual Award Banquet in November. The Educator of the Year Award is not given every year. It reserved to honor those who have contributed in an outstanding manner to the education of Indiana students.


 

Burney NAGC awardVIRGINIA BURNEY 
Department of Educational Psychology

Dr. Burney has won the David W. Belin Advocacy Award for her work with state and national advocacy for gifted children. She received this highly competitive national award at the annual meeting of the National Association for Gifted Children in November.

Dr. Kathy Steele, superintendent of Crawfordsville Community Schools, received the Ball State Administrator Award, given by the NAGC each year, with generous support from Ball State University. The award recognizes a principal or superintendent outside the field of gifted education, who has made a significant contribution to gifted education in his/her school, district or across the nation.

ANTHONY KLINE 
Department of Elementary Education

Dr. Kline was recognized by Phi Delta Kappa, International as an Emerging Leader for 2012-13. PDK, International Emerging Leaders program recognizes top educators under the age of 40 from around the world for their leadership. Kline created the Malawi Field Study, in which he leads preservice educators to the developing country of Malawi, Africa. He also leads an Immersive Learning Program in which students develop strategies to increase the number of male mentors in local communities. 

MARILYNN QUICK
Department of Educational Leadership
Dr. Quick received the Outstanding Leadership and Contribution to Education Award from Indiana University School Administrators Association. This award recognizes Indiana University Educational Leadership program graduates who have had a distinguished career in education, who have shown outstanding leadership, and have had at least 15 years of experience in a leadership role.

HOLMES FINCH

W. Holmes FinchDepartment of Educational Psychology

Dr. Finch received Ball State University's Outstanding Researcher of the Year Award for 2012. Dr. Finch teaches courses in statistical and research methodology as well as psychometrics and educational measurement. His research interests involve issues in psychometrics, including dimensionality assessment, differential item functioning, generalizability theory and unfolding models. In addition, he pursues research in multivariate statistics, particularly those involving nonparametric techniques.

LAWRENCE GERSTEIN
Department of Counseling Psychology and Guidance Services
Gerstein received the APA 2012 International Section of Counseling Psychology Lifetime Achievement Award. The American Psychological Association Division 17 International Section committee selected him because of his exceptional, visionary, creative, and courageous achievements; his longstanding contributions; and his tremendous impact on the counseling professional.

SHARON BOWMAN
Department of Counseling Psychology and Guidance Services
Bowman was selected by the American Psychological Association’s Division 45 to receive Fellow status. Division 45, Society for the Psychology Study of Ethnic Minority Issues, is the major representative body for psychologists who conduct research on ethnic minority concerns or who apply psychological knowledge and techniques to ethnic minority issues. Fellows are individuals who have made significant and unusual contributions to ethnic minority issues consistent with the mission of Division 45, and whose work has had a national/ international impact.

SHARON BOWMAN
Department of Counseling Psychology and Guidance Services
Bowman was elected President-elect of the 2400+ member Division 17, the Society of Counseling Psychology. This is one of the divisions of the American Psychological Association, the largest professional association for psychologists in the U.S. Division 17 brings together psychologists, students, and international and professional affiliates who are dedicated to promoting education and training, scientific investigation, practice, and diversity and public interest in professional psychology. Division 17 advocates for counseling psychology within the field of psychology and in the public sector. Division 17 also supports, encourages, and promotes its members and celebrates their diversity. This is a three-year term (President-elect, President, Past-President) to begin August 2012.

Clarke named Northern Kentucky University's 2011 College of Education and Human Services Outstanding Alumni. This award recognizes alumni who have achieved success in their chosen fields and those who have made significant contributions benefiting the university and/or the community-at-large.

SERENA SALLOUM
Department of Educational Leadership
Salloum's dissertation was selected as a finalist and given the status of runner up in an outstanding dissertation in educational administration 2012 competition held by Division A of the American Educational Research Association. She received her doctorate from the University of Michigan in 2011.

AMANDA LATZ
Department of Educational Studies
Latz's dissertation, "Understanding the Educational Lives of Community College Students Through Photovoice," received the 2012 BSU Alumni Association Outstanding Dissertation Award. Thalia Mulvihill was the dissertation chair. Latz received her doctorate from Ball State in 2011. Selection of this award is based on the originality of the research, the significance of the problem in terms of its contribution to knowledge, the quality of the writing, and the potential for publication. Her dissertation research also received an honorable mention for the 2011 Barbara K. Townsend Dissertation Award.  This prestigious award is sponsored by The National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students and recognizes dissertations that advance the knowledge about and/or effective service to transfer students.

LISA RUBENSTEIN

Rubenstein won the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) Outstanding Doctoral Student Award. This highly competitive award recognizes recent graduates of programs in gifted education, who have demonstrated exemplary work in research, publications, and educational service, and have outstanding potential for future scholarship.

WINNIE MUCHERAH

Mucherah received the University’s 2011 Diversity Advocate Award. This award is given in recognition of demonstrated excellence in championing the cause of diversity by a member of the Ball State community.

KENDALL BRONK
Department of Educational Psychology
Bronk received the University’s 2011 Outstanding Junior Faculty Award. This award is given in recognition of demonstrated composite excellence in teaching, scholarly or creative productivity, and service by a faculty member beginning an academic career, who has been at Ball State University for no more than five years, in a tenure track position no more than five years, and no more than seven full time years in higher education.

Nicholas received the University’s 2011 Outstanding Faculty Service Award. This award is given in recognition of exceptional professional service. Service may be to the department, college, university, profession, community, or a combination thereof.

Gerstein awarded the American Psychological Association 2011 Division 52 Henry Davis International Mentoring Award. This award honors an exceptional mentoring role in an international context.

KRISTIN PERRONE-MCGOVERN
Department of Counseling Psychology & Guidance Services
Perrone-McGovern named an Outstanding Counseling Supervisory Practitioner. This award is sponsored by the American Psychological Association’s Section for Supervision and Training of Division 17. It is given to practicing counseling psychologists who demonstrate superior commitment to supervision within counseling practice (vs. administrative or managerial). She was recognized at the association’s annual conference in August 2011.

RUBY CAIN
Department of Educational Studies
Cain recognized by the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette and Leadership Fort Wayne as one of 101 Connectors throughout Allen County who have the ability to create and influence change and are trusted leaders. Out of the 101 Connectors, Cain was one of five selected as a community star to have a profile published in The Journal Gazette.

BO CHANG
Department of Educational Studies
Chang received the Adult Literacy and Adult Education Award for an Outstanding Paper by an Early Career Scholar for her paper entitled “Exploring Socio-cultural Factors that Shape the Knowledge Construction: A Case Study.” The Adult Literacy & Adult Education Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) sponsors this award. Chang received her award at the AERA Convention in April 2011.

LYNN STALEY

Staley named a recipient of a 2011 Excellence in Teaching Award, which is coordinated by the Innovation in Teaching, Assessment, and Scholarship office. As part of the award, Staley will have the opportunity to present her dream course, "Education for Local/Global Citizenship (ELGC)." This course will combine theory and practice as university students explore the fundamentals of ELGC and then apply that knowledge by facilitating service projects in both a local Professional Development School and a school in Makutano, Kenya. The final outcome is to empower children for advocacy.

Gerstein and Aegisdottir are among the authors of a book, International Handbook of Cross-Cultural Counseling: Cultural Assumptions and Practices Worldwide, that received the 2010 Ursula Gielen Global Psychology Book Award. This award is sponsored by Division 52 of the American Psychological Association and is presented to the authors or editors of a recent book that makes the greatest contribution to psychology as an international discipline and profession.

LAWRENCE GERSTEIN
Department of Counseling Psychology and Guidance ServicesIn December 2010 Gerstein was named a Fellow in the American Psychological Association's Divisions 52 (International Psychology) and 48 (Society for the Study of Peace, Conflict, and Violence). He is a long time Fellow in Division 17 (Society of Counseling Psychology). Fellow status is bestowed upon members who have shown evidence of unusual and outstanding contributions or performance in the field of psychology.
