A Springboard to a New Career

Degree completion student Kelly Foreman
Ball State online student Kerry Foreman has two young children. In addition to working toward her bachelor's degree, she volunteers at her children's school and coaches middle school cheerleaders.

Kerry Foreman’s journey to earn a bachelor’s degree started almost two decades ago on the Muncie, Indiana, campus of Ball State University and will end in 2011 from her home in Colorado.

“When I attended Ball State 18 years ago, I had no idea why I was in school—it's just what you were supposed to do. I knew I was capable, but at the time, I just couldn't get it together,” says Foreman, a mother of two in her late 30s.

Her story may sound familiar.

According to the Lumina Foundation, 37 million U.S. adults ages 25–64—more than 20 percent of the working population—have attended college but haven’t earned a degree. But with added wisdom and significant life and career experience behind her, Foreman exemplifies that it is never too late to finish those unrealized life goals.

“Since that time, I’ve had a lucrative career as a Realtor; however, I felt unfulfilled,” Foreman says. “After having my children, I realized I wanted to be able to practice what I preach. I wanted them to know that their mom had her degree and worked hard to get it.”

Foreman looked again to Ball State, but this time to its online degree completion program.

“I knew that at Ball State I would get the best education to start my new career,” she said. “Ball State gives me the springboard and confidence I need to finish my degree. Since I am eventually pursuing teaching licensure, it is imperative that I have a portion of my education from one of the best Teachers Colleges around.”
