Test Requirements

General Information
For licensure in Indiana all teachers are required to take the Praxis I Reading, Writing and Mathematics tests. Ball State requires that students achieve a passing score on these three tests prior to admission to the 300 level teacher education courses. These tests can be taken by appointment at the testing center on campus (Testing Programs) or on the Saturday testing dates at various location around the state. Teachers are also required to pass the Praxis II test(s) for their content areas for licensure and graduation from the Ball State University Teacher Preparation program. Praxis II tests must be taken on the Saturday testing dates.

August 31, 2013
Last day PRAXIS I assessments will be administered on computer. Passing scores for the individual PRAXIS I basic skills assessments taken on or before August 31, 2013, will be honored.

September 1, 2013
Beginning on this date, the CASA is the approved basic skills assessment for candidates  seeking admission to Indiana teacher preparation programs. PRAXIS I tests taken on or after this date will not be honored for the purpose of admission into Indiana teacher preparation programs.

Candidates who have not passed all three PRAXIS I basic skills assessments by September 1, 2013 will be allowed to register for the individual CASA basic skills assessment(s) in the area(s) they still need to pass (please see the categories and cut scores below). For example, a candidate who passed the PRAXIS I reading and writing tests will need to pass the CASA math basic skills test and will be allowed to register for that single CASA assessment. Please note that the writing test has two subtests. Each writing subtest has a cut score. In order to receive a pass on the writing test as a whole, the candidate receive a passing score on the two writing subtests. should a student fail the MCQ or CRI portion of the writing test (see below) they cannot register for just that one subtest. The student must register for the entire writing test.

CASA Format

Reading MCQ (multiple choice question): cut score 20
Mathematics MCQ: cut score 19
**Writing (MCQ): cut score 20
**Writing CRI (constructed response item): cut score 5

**Please note: A candidate who achieves the cut score for both sections of the writing test will pass. The MCQ section is weighted 60% and the CRI is weighted 40%.

The State Board did not approve a CASA composite score.

The approved alternatives to PRAXIS I will remain in effect after CASA is implemented.
