Biography

Cosima Stadnik has been an adjunct faculty member at Ball State University since 2012 where she instructs courses in ballet technique and dance history.

At the age of 15 she gained recognition as a prize winner at the Prix de Lausanne, Switzerland. She continued her studies on scholarship at the San Francisco Ballet School and then moved to Europe to study at the State Ballet School in East Berlin, (department of Stage Dance) from which she graduated in 1989.

Cosima’s professional career began in Dresden, Germany dancing with the Semper Opera State Ballet. During her tenure, she was coached by Safronova to dance the Pas de deux from Paquita with principal dancer Raymond Hilbert. In 1991 she was offered a contract with the Ballet of the Vienna State Opera, Austria.

Her repertoire there included corps de ballet and solo roles in Swan Lake, Giselle, La fille mal gardée, Romeo and Juliet, Manon, Midsummer Night’s Dream as well as making solo guest appearances for companies such as Tanz Atellier, Vienna.

In the summer of 1993, Cosima was invited to Russia to perform in Swan Lake with the St. Petersburg Ballet Miniatures lead by Askold Makarov. In 1994 she was given the opportunity to dance as soloist with the Russian State Ballet of Moscow (Dir. Gordeyev) and toured with this company throughout Europe, Mexico and Asia. In Moscow she performed on the stage of the Kremlin Theatre, Moscow in both The Nutcracker and Swan Lake.

In 1995, she began her studies to be a teacher at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory, Rimsky Korsakov, Department of Choreography and Dance. During the summer 1998, she was invited to dance with the renowned Bayreuth Festival, Germany, conducted by Daniel Barenboim.

During her time at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, she studied with such notable professors as ex Kirov ballerina Gabriella Komleva and the late Nikita Dolgushin amongst other notable teachers of the ‘Leningrad’ school. After graduating in 1999 with honors M.F.A. she moved to Zurich, Switzerland to teach at the Professional school for Swiss Dancers (since renamed Zurich Tanz Akademie, Dir. Oliver Matz).

Cosima guest coached dancers of the State Ballet of Lithuania, Vilnus for their production of Sleeping Beauty and taught for the 2004 summer program of the Russian Ballet Society in Edinburgh, Scotland. The following year she moved to the USA to become Assistant Principal of Tulsa Ballet Center for Dance Education. Since 2006, she has taught master classes and workshops in New Mexico where she resided for 5 years. In the summer of 2014 she taught for the summer program of American Academy of Ballet in New York held at SUNY Purchase, State University of New York.

She enjoys bringing her knowledge of the world of ballet and theatre to her courses at Ball State University.
