Biography

Michael Worcel has also been on the dance faculty at Ball State University since 1992 teaching jazz dance, musical theatre, tap, dance history, directing and choreographing musicals, and choreographing for Ball State Dance Theatre Company.

He is an honors graduate in dance from Butler University and former member of the professional contemporary dance company Dance Kaleidoscope. This past June he attended a reunion in NY city with other members of the original Broadway cast and first Broadway National Tour of 42nd Street for which he performed from 1984-86.

To date he has choreographed over fifty musicals for such theatres as Actors Theatre of Indiana, Beef N Boards Dinner Theatre, Ball State Theatre, Muncie Civic and nineteen shows for Indianapolis Civic Theatre including Swing last season and Little Women for this coming fall of 2015. Other credits include choreography for Equity summer stock, theme parks, and revues for NCL cruise lines.

In 2010 he restaged the original Bob Fosse choreography of Chicago for Actors Theatre of Indiana, the resident professional company at the Carmel Performing Arts Center. Tom Alvarez of the Examiner wrote “adapted by Michael Worcel, Fosse’s distinctive work is still fresh and is the real star of the show.” In 2013 he was awarded an immersive grant from Ball State for a project titled The Golden Age of Jazz in collaboration with music professor Mark Buselli and marketing professor Susan Mantel which showcased big band music and swing dance and was performed at the Paramount Theatre in Anderson and Brown County Playhouse in Nashville, Indiana. The project was nominated for an immersive learning award this past spring.

He was recently honored for 25 years of teaching at Anderson Young Ballet Academy and during his time teaching for AYBT he has had eight concert dance pieces adjudicated and chosen for performance by the AYBT Company at Midstates Dance Festivals in various cities around the Midwest. Other highlights include directing and choreographing the full length liturgical ballet Le Voyage accompanied in live concert with recording artist Sandi Patty during the 1999 AYBT season.

In both 1994 and 1999, Michael was awarded a Certificate of Merit for Choreography from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for his work on Ball State’s production of Company, which was chosen for performance at the American College Theatre Festival Regional Division and for 42nd Street which was part of the 1999 Ball State University Theatre season.

In 2002 he was the recipient of the Ball State University College of Fine Arts Dean’s Teaching Award for excellence in teaching and has trained many students who have gone on to perform in major dance companies, on Broadway and in National Tours.
