Michael Schmalz joined the Ball State University Department of Theatre and Dance as the production manager and head of the stage management program in 2012. Before coming to Ball State, Michael served in the same capacity at the Baylor Department of Theatre Arts for 7 years. He received his MFA from Carnegie Mellon University. Over the last 35 years he has worked on well over 100 shows including extensive tours of the U.S. and Canada as well as numerous productions in New York and Los Angeles.
During his time in New York Michael worked at Musical Theatre Works, Papermill Playhouse, Theatre of St. Peters as well as a free-lance stage manager in many Off Broadway productions. While in Los Angles he worked with Lee Strasberg Institute, Los Angeles Public Theatre, Groundling Improv Company and the Los Angeles Ballet. Michael was also the Production Stage Manager for Barry Manilow Presents Copacabana at Caesars on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City and the Production Manager for Shakespeare in the Park in Minneapolis.
Over the years it has been his privilege to work with such authors as Israel Horovitz and John Ford Noonan, such directors as Edgar Lansbury and Bill Bushnell, such actors as Elizabeth Ashley, Joseph Bologna and Renee Taylor and such entertainers as Barry Manilow and Mitzi Gaynor among others.
He is a member of the Production Managers Forum, Actor’s Equity Association, the Stage Mangers Association and USITT.
