The Writing Proficiency Exam is an assessment tool, which is designed to assess your ability to think critically, form judgments, and communicate those judgments in written essays which are logically constructed and expressed in manner appropriate for junior-level college students.

These objectives are more fully explained on the Writing Proficiency Program Objective Statement, and you should look carefully at the Grading Criteria to understand how those objectives are applied when your work is assessed.

In order to better understand what to expect and what you can do to prepare for the Exam, you should familiarize yourself with the materials in this section of the website.

Look at the pre-work suggestions, the sample Critical Reading of an Article to see what one student did to prepare, and look at the commentary on the Sample Essay for more information about what works and what does not.

If you do not prepare for the Writing Proficiency Exam, you will not understand what is expected of you, why you are doing it, why you do or do not pass, or what you can gain from the experience. It will be a lost learning opportunity for you.
