Certificate in Charter School Leadership

NOTE: We are currently not taking applications for the Charter School Leadership Graduate Certificate as the program undergoes revisions. If you are interested in the program and have questions, please contact Lori Boyland, chair of the Department of Educational Leadership.

From a university with impressive credentials related to charter schools and preparing educational leaders, you can now earn a graduate certificate in charter school administration—in an online, accelerated format that you can complete in just two semesters.

Our certificate’s curriculum is based on what you and your school need, not just theory and guesses. Before launching our certificate, we surveyed charter school leaders to see what would help them most with daily operations and long-term needs. The result is a program acknowledging that the role of a charter school principal is comparable to the role of a public school superintendent.

We understand that you may have special challenges working with underserved or underprivileged populations, and that you need superior skills in evaluating and supervising teachers, implementing and evaluating curriculum, civil rights and disability regulations, educational law, facilities requirements, and the business side of running a school.

Why Ball State?
We are uniquely qualified to offer the only online graduate certificate in the nation aimed to prepare leaders and educators in charter school supervision:

  • Since 2001, Ball State has been the only university in Indiana authorizing charter schools for the state.
  • Our educational leadership programs are ranked 17th in the nation by US News & World Report. The programs have been nationally ranked since 2005.
  • Our Office of Charter Schools serves Indiana’s charter schools and is a repository of charter school-related research.
  • Our top-quality faculty are actively engaged in charter school research and working with charter schools.
  • If you decide you want to further your education more, all the courses in the certificate program can count toward our all-online master's in educational administration and supervision
