University Libraries Introduce New CardCat Service: Text Yourself a Call Number

Let’s see. The call number was “NS5341, or was it NS5373, or was it NS5378? I should have written it down!”

Seeing a call number on the screen and not correctly recalling it later when in the stacks is a familiar experience.

Thanks to some programming work by Victor B. Replogle, Library Technologies Support Analyst, the University Libraries’ online catalog CardCat now provides a tool for students, faculty, and others to send a text message with a call number to mobile devices. For periodicals or bestsellers where the title is more important than the call number for locating the item, the title will be sent in the text message. If you are curious about what will be texted, the pop-up window displays the text. Of course, standard texting messaging rates apply.

When this new feature was put into production in mid-January, within 20 minutes a dozen text messages had already been sent. After two full weeks, over 1,000 texts had been sent.
