Ninth Annual Copyright Conference

Attendees at the 2011 Ball State University Libraries Copyright Conference. The Ball State University Libraries’ is pleased to announce its Ninth Annual Copyright Conference, Copyright in Casablanca, April 18, 2012. The University Libraries’ conference is the only annual intellectual property conference in the Midwest and it is the only Copyright Conference in the United States that addresses both academic and K-12 intellectual property needs concurrently.

This Copyright Conference is also unique in that the registration fee is not in the multiple hundreds of dollars, but is only $85. This registration fee not only includes a conference packet but also a continental breakfast, snack breaks and a buffet lunch. Furthermore, this conference is singularly the only intellectual property conference in the United States that is duly authorized to grant simultaneous Continuing Legal Education credits, Library Education Units, and Professional Growth Plan hours to those attendees who need them for continuing education credits.

Besides dedicated and breakout sessions on both academic and K-12 IP concerns, something new has been added to the conference. This year, registered attendees will be able to submit copyright questions and scenarios to our speaker panel and those that have been selected by them will be used for discussions in two panel sessions.

Speakers for the Conference are both nationally and internationally well-known and represent a wide and all-encompassing purview of intellectual property expertise in academic and K-12 issues. Our speakers include:

Dwayne K. Buttler, J.D., University of Louisville
Michelle L. Cooper, J.D., Bose McKinney Evans LLP
Donna L. Ferullo, J.D., Purdue University
Deb Howell, CRISC, GSEC, Ball State University
Janice Pilch, M.A., M.S., Rutgers University
James R. Williams, J.D., DeFur Voran LLP

The U.S. Copyright Law protects a vast range of materials and consists of a bundle of exclusive rights for any copyright owner including minors. Violating any one of these exclusive rights can lead to liability for copyright infringement. But the Copyright Law also provides a few, narrow and focused exemptions to these exclusive rights of the copyright owner. Several of these are vital for the academic and K-12 educational community as well as for today’s public librarians, media specialists, academic librarians, and their administrators as well. This conference will address and clarify using someone else’s copyrighted material properly for educational uses.

The Ninth Annual Copyright Conference at Ball State is a key resource for answers to questions engendered by the complexities of our intellectual property digital age.
