Art
T. Riesing, Chairperson
The Department of Art educates artists, designers, and teachers. The Department of Art offers four-year professional degree options in the disciplines of ceramics, drawing, electronic art (animation and video), glass, metals/jewelry design, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, visual communication (graphic design), and a teaching major in visual arts. In addition, a minor in art history is available.
Approval to pursue a major in art involves a selection process in addition to admission to the university. The Department of Art Admission and Scholarship Committee carefully screens all applicants and decides which students to admit into art major status based on a review of academic records and a portfolio of original work.
-
Incoming freshman must submit both the university application and art program application to be admitted as an art major. All students admitted to the Department of Art complete a common first-year program of study comprised of required courses in drawing, design, computer art, and art history.
-
Currently enrolled students who have not been granted art major status as an incoming freshman can request art courses as a pre-art major in the spring or summer terms. Students then submit the art program application upon completion of the foundation core (ADS 101, 102; AFA 101, 202) at the next scheduled review.
-
Transfer students from other universities are required to submit portfolios to the Department of Art as well as transcripts for evaluation and admittance. Transfer students specializing in any program must complete the foundation core (ADS 101, 102; AFA 101, 202) before being admitted to areas of specialization in the second year of study. For students wanting a specialization in visual communication, it is unusual for students to be admitted at any point other than at the beginning of the three-year sequence of courses.
Students specializing in any art program must receive grades of C or higher in all foundation core courses (ADS 101, 102; AFA 101, 202) before enrolling in advanced level courses. Students must repeat courses in which they receive grades of C- or below. Students that meet the grade requirement then select an area of specialization for the second through fourth years of study. Specializations involve a three-year sequence of courses beyond the first-year foundation core.
-
Electronic Art (Animation option) – Students wanting to pursue this major specialization must undergo an additional review after successful completion of the foundation core (ADS 101, 102; AFA 101, 202). Review guidelines are revised periodically and made available through the Department of Art.
-
Visual Communication – Students wanting to pursue this major specialization must undergo an additional review after successful completion of the foundation core (ADS 101, 102; AFA 101, 202). Review guidelines are revised periodically and made available through the Department of Art.
-
Visual Arts Education – Students wanting to pursue a teaching major must meet all teacher certification and GPA requirements. Students are encouraged to meet with a faculty advisor.
All students in the department undergo periodic reviews of their portfolios throughout their undergraduate education. The department reserves the right to retain examples of student work for exhibition and accreditation. The bachelor of fine arts program for all studio areas requires a senior thesis and/or an exit portfolio evaluation.
Students are strongly advised to pursue required course sequences during the regular academic year. Summer school courses are limited and are subject to last minute changes or cancelations.
Studio courses are open to art majors, pre-art majors, and art minors except by permission of the department chairperson. All students may enroll in art history courses based on the completion of the prerequisites. Minors in art are not required to submit an art application but must receive approval from the Department of Art. Minors may begin courses in the spring or summer term.
The Department of Art is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
For more information, contact the Department of Art, 765-285-5838.
