Conditional Admission

Conditional admission means you can be admitted to Ball State under specific conditions that you must meet to be considered for full admission.

Undergraduate Conditional Admission

The most common form of undergraduate conditional admission is for English proficiency. Conditional admission may be appropriate for undergraduate students who wish to apply to Ball State but who have not yet taken a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam or who have a TOEFL score below 79 IBT or higher, 550 PBT or IELTS 6.5 bands.

Undergraduate applicants are not required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores.  Undergraduate and non-degree students are considered for conditional admission by default.

Undergraduate Process

If admitted conditionally, you are required to take an English placement test on the first day of orientation. To ensure you are present to take this test, it is very important that you complete the application in a timely manner in order to make the proper travel arrangements.

The placement test will determine how many Intensive English Institute (IEI) courses you require before beginning a full academic semester of courses. The English courses are mandatory. You cannot begin a full selection of academic course work until your IEI courses are completed. Undergraduate applicants requesting conditional admission must complete an application and submit all the items requested in the application checklist found on the Admission Requirements page.

Graduate Conditional Admission

Not all graduate programs will accept conditional admission.  Please check Conditional Admission Exclusion List to see if your program of interest is excluded from conditional admission.

Graduate Process

If your desired program allows you to be admitted conditionally, you are required to take an English placement test on the first day of orientation. To ensure you are present to take this test, it is very important that you complete the application in a timely manner in order to make the proper travel arrangements.

The placement test will determine how many Intensive English Institute (IEI) courses you require before beginning a full academic semester of courses. The English courses are mandatory. You cannot begin a full selection of academic course work until the IEI courses are completed.

Graduate applicants requesting conditional admission will not be considered for assistantships or fellowships and must complete an application and submit all the items requested in the application checklist, including the full amount of financial documentation requested.
