Minority Teacher and Special Education Services Scholarships

These scholarships are funded by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE) and administered by our office.

You may qualify for this scholarship if you are

  • a minority student (defined as Black or Hispanic) seeking a teaching certification; or student seeking a Special Education teaching certification
  • enrolled full-time (12 hours)
  • pursuing a course of study that would allow you to teach in an accredited Indiana elementary or secondary school

Indiana residents (of any race or ethnic group) and are enrolled full-time and pursuing a course of study to teach special education in an accredited Indiana elementary or secondary school are also eligible for this award.

The amount of the award is determined by our office. The maximum annual non-need based scholarship is $1,000. Financial need may be considered but is not a requirement.

Awards are made until funds are exhausted with preference given to minority students enrolling in college for the first time.

Students already enrolled in college must have a GPA of at least 2.0 or the minimum requirement set by the university for the Teachers College/Special Education program, whichever is higher.

The recipient must agree to complete the degree requirements within six years of the time the award is first received and must teach full time for three of five years in an accredited Indiana elementary or secondary school.

Applications are available in early spring at www.in.gov/ssaci. April 15 is the priority deadline for application.

You must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be eligible for this award.
