Founded in 2007, Balsam Range consists of five friends with unique experiences and backgrounds that blend together effortlessly to form their distinctive sound. Since bursting on to the scene, Balsam Range has made a definite mark in the Bluegrass and Acoustic music world.
Balsam Range is:
Buddy Melton, vocals, fiddle – Buddy began his musical journeyin college, learning to play fiddle at that time. He has performedwith Jubal Foster before joining Balsam Range. Buddy is also atalented acoustic bass player, who has performed regularly withDavid Holt and Doc Watson. He is probably best known for hisunique tenor vocal that is a staple in the BR sound.
Darren Nicholson, vocals, mandolin – Darren has performedmany times on the Grand Ole Opry stage with Alecia Nugent, andhas toured with The Crowe Brothers among many other artists,traveling all over the world. Darren is a Grammy nominee andmultiple IBMA award-winner.Marc Pruett, banjo – Grammy award-winning Marc Pruett earnedhis honor playing with Ricky Skaggs. He led the Marc PruettBand for 10 years playing Bill Stanley’s BBQ in Asheville. Marcearned his honorary doctorate from Western Carolina University in2010 for his contributions to Bluegrass Music. He also toured withJames Monroe, Jimmy Martin, and The Whites.
Caleb Smith, vocals, guitar – Caleb performed as a member ofgospel group ‘Harvest’ prior to joining Balsam Range. At that time,he was awarded “Male Vocalist of the Year” for the PowerGrassMusic Awards. Caleb lends his songwriting talents to the band andis a talented luthier, building Smith Custom Guitars.
Tim Surrett, vocals, bass; dobro – Highly regarded in SouthernGospel music circles, Tim has performed with the KingsmenQuartet, earning a place in the Southern Gospel Music Hall ofFame. He has also performed/recorded with Tony Rice, RalphStanley, and Vince Gill. He has earned multiple awards forGospel Musician of the Year.
Emens Presents At Pruis Hall
Pruis Hall is situated just off of Woodworth drive next to Bracken Library. This 640-seat venue provides an intimate setting for musical performances and is used to host a variety of special events throughout the school year. Emens Auditorium programs a series of talented musical artists at Pruis Hall in a series called "Emens Presents at Pruis." This event is featured in this series.
