Women's Issues Specialization/Apprenticeship

An intern taking this area of specialization will in conjunction with a staff mentor design experiences focusing on one or two select "Women's issues". The Intern will select a staff mentor who will provide guidance and assistance to help the Intern create a comprehensive area of specialization which meets the goal and objectives of this area. Interns may select a "Womens's issues" topic (excluding Eating Disorder Specialization) such as Women of Color, Depression, Identity Issues, Non-traditional Aged-Women, Single Parents, Violence against Women, Women and Career, etc. This focus will be reflected by involvement with Outreach, Programming, Consultation, Individual and Group Clinical Experiences, Assessment, Supervision, and Training that focus on Women's issues.

GOAL:
THE INTERN WILL DEVELOP ADVANCED SKILLS IN THE AREA OF A FEMINIST APPROACH TO WOMEN'S ISSUES, TRAINING, PROGRAMMING, CONSULTATION, COUNSELING AND SUPERVISION. THE INTERN WILL BE SEEN AS A DEVELOPING EXPERT IN THIS AREA.

OBJECTIVES:
  • Objective 1: The intern will have a broad and in-depth knowledge of the literature and research concerning women's issues, counseling and identity development.
  • Objective 2: The intern will have in-depth knowledge of the literature and research on the impact of societal oppression, sexism, homophobia, and violence on women. The intern may chose to participate in a Stone Center readings discussion group to meet this objective.
  • Objective 3: The intern will develop and deepen skills in counseling women and will receive additional Feminist-oriented supervision for their work.
  • Objective 4: The intern will develop and deepen skills in providing group counseling to women. May co-facilitate a women's group (Non-traditional Women's Group, Graduate Student Women's Support Group, Undergraduate Women's Group, Women's Identity Group, Assertiveness for Women Group, etc.)
  • Objective 5: The intern will competently deliver outreach and consultation services through participation with outreach teams which focus primarily on issues affecting women (i.e. Sexual Assault team, Eating Disorders team, focus on women of color or lesbians with Diversity Team). Arrangements may be made for the intern to be involved with the Women's Studies Department to assist with projects (Take Back The Night March, Women's Week) etc.
  • Objective 6: The intern will develop a creative project or novel programming in this area.
  • Objective 7: The intern will provide supervision to a female Master's trainee.
  • Objective 8: One of the intern's clinical case presentations will be with a female client who is representative of the intern's area of focus with Women's issues.
  • Objective 9: Staff and Supervisors working with the interns in this area will be role models and mentors supporting and assisting the intern's personal and professional development.
PROCESS:
The intern specializing in this area will be assigned a staff supervisor/mentor who will be responsible for coordinating the intern's professional and intellectual development in this area. This staff member will also supervise the intern's clinical work with these clients and assist the intern in developing programming as well as developing their presentation or workshop for presentation at a conference or their submission of an article for publication. In addition, this person will guide the intern's reading of the literature in the area unless other arrangements are made (i.e., Stone Center readings discussion option).

CLINICAL WORK:
The interns will carry a caseload of 3-5 individual clients who are representative of the intern's "Women's Issues" focus area. The intern will also co-lead a Women's group with a staff member during the first semester and during the second semester may continue with the staff member or be the primary leader with another trainee as co-leader. The intern will receive 1 hour of weekly individual supervision from their specialization supervisor as well as group supervision from their staff group co-leader. During their second semester, if the intern co-leads with another trainee, their specialization supervisor will provide supervision for the group.

OUTREACH/TRAINING/CONSULTATION:
The intern will be expected to develop creative programming or projects for the community dealing with their "Women's Issues" focus area. This may be done under the auspice of an Outreach Team (i.e. Sexual Assault, Gender, Relationship, Diversity Team) or as a stand alone program. The intern will also respond to questions in their topic area submitted to "Concerned Charlie", a computer based service that allows students to submit personal and informational questions to the center. Staff and interns in the center respond to these questions in their areas of expertise. The responses are reviewed by a committee before being put out over the university computer network.

SUPERVISION:
The intern will provide supervision to female Masters trainees working with them clinically or in programming and consultation.

INVOLVEMENT IN THE PROFESSION:
The intern will attend functions that deal with Women's issues. They will develop a creative project and/or presentation or workshop for presentation at a State, Regional or National conference or submit an article for publication. This presentation, workshop or publication can be done cooperatively with staff and others or independently.

EVALUATION:
The intern will be evaluated in a variety of ways by their supervisor, coordinator of joint center/Women's Studies projects, group co-leader. Since the intern is making this an area of specialization, supervisors will do all they can to assist the intern and mentor the intern in development of their expertise in this area. If, for any reason, the supervisors/mentors in this area believe that the intern should not specialize in this area, this will be discussed in depth with the intern and with the training director. The aim of evaluation is to insure the intern has advanced knowledge and skill in this area and is seen as a developing expert in the area.

  1. The intern's supervisor/mentor in this area will fill out a Clinical Supervisors evaluation for individual clinical work three times during the internship (see Appendix 2).
  2. The supervisor/mentor will fill out a Special Projects Evaluation form at the end of each semester that reflects an evaluation of the intern's competence in providing training, programming, outreach and consultation activities (Appendix 2).
  3. Option: The coordinator of the joint center/Women's Studies projects will evaluate the intern on the Special Projects Evaluation form twice yearly at the end of each semester.
  4. Group co-leaders will fill out the Group Evaluation Form at the end of each semester they co-lead with the intern (Appendix 2).
  5. Supervisors will also provide ongoing informal feedback to the intern.
  6. Supervisors will provide oral feedback to the training director through meetings of the Supervisors' Committee.
  7. The interns will evaluate their supervisors, project coordinators and group co-leaders as well on the designated forms (Appendix 3).
  8. An overall assessment of the intern's level of expertise in the specialization will be done at the end of the internship year and be a part of the Attainment of Training Goals Evaluation Appendix 2).
  9. Evaluation is to be seen as reciprocal and shared openly between the intern and his or her supervisors and the training director.
