Greek Historical Timeline

1907 President, Francis M. Ingler of the Indiana Normal School and College of Applied Science, decreed all fraternities to be disbanded. The cause behind this decree was Phi Sigma Theta having a cow roaming through its fraternity house. Greek-letter organizations existed at the Indiana Normal School and College of Applied Science, but historical records are inaccurate and do not specify how many Greek-letter organizations existed and when they were established. 

The Indiana Normal School and College of Applied Science closed.
1918   The Eastern Branch of the Indiana State Normal School on April 4, 1918, established.
1919  During the next year, 1919, the Girls Club started, which followed in the tradition of the organization at Indiana State Normal School in Terre Haute. The Girls Club remained the governing body for sororities throughout the '20s and '30s. All girls were eligible to be a member, and local sororities started in sections of the club With the inaccuracy of records prior to the Girls Club's founding, Ball State University celebrates 1919 as the founding year for the Greek community at Ball State.
1920   Alpha sorority established. They are the first sorority at Ball State University. On June 10, 1950 Alpha sorority becomes a chapter of Alpha Chi Omega.

Sigma Alpha Sigma sorority established. On December 12, 1936 Sigma Alpha Sigma becomes a chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha and is the first women's organization at Ball State University to affiliate with a national organization.

The Navajo Social Club established, becoming the first men's organization. Members specifically did not use "fraternity" in their name since they remembered the old injunction by President Ingler in 1907.The Navajo Social Club applied to become an incorporated fraternity recognized by the state of Indiana on 1934 . The Navajo Fraternity, Inc. became a chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha on January 28, 1951.

Gamma Gamma established. On August 23, 1952 Gamma Gamma becomes a chapter of Pi Beta Phi.

LAMARDA established, who in 1922 changes their named to Lambda Delta Phi. In 1938 Lambda Delta Phi merges with the sororities of Phi Delta Xi established in 1922 and Epsilon Delta established in 1923 to form the sorority of Phi Delta Lambda. In 1944 Phi Delta Lambda becomes a chapter of Delta Sigma Epsilon. On August 22, 1956 Delta Sigma Epsilon merges with Delta Zeta.

Pi Zeta local sorority established. On March 20, 1954 Pi Zeta sorority becomes a chapter of Sigma Kappa.
1921  Mu Zeta sorority established. Mu Zeta becomes a chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma on April 20, 1945.

J.J.G. club sorority established. who becomes Omega in 1923 and later in the same year changes their name to Omega Sigma Chi. Omega Sigma Chi becomes a chapter of Delta Zeta on February 28, 1953.
1922  Kappa Kappa sorority established. On May 24, 1952 Kappa Kappa sorority becomes a chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi

Triangle Club fraternity established. The Triangle Club applies to becomes an incorporated organization recognized by the state of Indiana in 1926. On January 20, 1951 Triangle Club, Inc. becomes a chapter of Theta Chi.
1924     Sigma Beta Tau sorority established. On September 28, 1945 Sigma Beta Tau becomes a chapter of Pi Sigma Kappa. In 1954 Pi Sigma Kappa merges with Sigma Kappa

The Entre-Nous Club sorority established.
1925  Psi Theta sorority established. Psi Theta becomes a chapter of Chi Omega on May 10, 1952.
1926 Delta Phi Sigma fraternity established. They are the first mens organization to use Greek Letters in their name. Delta Phi Sigma becomes a chapter of Phi Sigma Epsilon on February 21, 1948. On August 14, 1985 Phi Sigma Epsilon merged with Phi Sigma Kappa.

Delta Sigma sorority established who changes their name to Delta Sigma Althleta in 1926. Delta Sigma Athleta becomes a chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau on May 26, 1945. 

Sigma Epsilon sorority established.
1928 Lambda Sigma Chi fraternity established. On April 26, 1930 Lambda Sigma Chi becomes a chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma and becomes the first
organization at Ball State University to affiliate with a national organization.
1943 Navajo Fraternity, Inc. becomes inactive due to low enrollment from World War II.

Triangle Club, Inc. becomes inactive due to low enrollment from World War II.
1945 Navajo Fraternity, Inc. re-activates.

Triangle Club, Inc. re-activates.
1946 Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. established as the first African-American sorority at Ball State University.
1947 Phi Beta Omicron fraternity established, later in the same year becomes a chapter of Kappa Sigma Kappa. On August 20, 1962 Kappa Sigma Kappa merges with Theta Xi.
1948 Zeta Chi fraternity established. Zeta Chi becomes a chapter of Phi Delta Pi on February 8, 1950. In the spring  of 1952, Phi Delta Pi disaffiliates from the national organization and returns to being a local fraternity. On February 21, 1953 Phi Delta Pi fraternity becomes a chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon.
1953 Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. established on February 22 as the first African-American fraternity at Ball State University.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. established.
1955  Cardinal Club men's social club established. In 1956 Cardinal Club changes its name to Chi Delta. On February 8, 1958 Cardinal Club becomes a chapter of Delta Chi.
1956 Ivy Club women's social club established. In 1960 Ivy Club changes its name to Kappa Tau Sigma. Kappa Tau Sigma in September of 1968 becomes a chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
1959 Pioneer Club men's social club established. In the same year Pioneer Club changes its name to Sigma Delta. On July 17, 1962 Sigma Delta becomes a chapter of Sigma Chi
1961   Gamma Theta established. Gamma Theta becomes a chapter of Alpha Phi on November 7, 1964.
1962  Sigma Theta fraternity established on February 22. On November 13, 1965 Sigma Theta becomes a chapter of Beta Theta Pi.
1963 Goovnaz men's social club established. In 1964, Goovnaz changes its name to Pi Gamma Delta. Pi Gamma Delta becomes a chapter of Delta Tau Delta on November 12, 1966.
1965   Beta Gamma Nu fraternity established. On October 26, 1967 Beta Gamma Nu becomes a chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
1966 Chi Kappa Epsilon fraternity established. In 1969 Chi Kappa Epsilon changes
their name to Phi Delta. On November 2, 1969 Phi Delta becomes a chapter
of Phi Delta Theta.

Sigma Beta Chi sorority established. On April 11, 1970 Sigma Beta Chi becomes a chapter of Delta Gamma.
1967        Kappa Theta Rho sorority established. Kappa Theta Rho becomes a chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta on December 27, 1970.

Omega Alpha Omega fraternity established. On November 11, 1971 Omega Alpha Omega becomes a chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
1968    Alpha Alpha Alpha fraternity established. On December 7, 1974 Alpha Alpha Alpha becomes a chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
1969     Tau Phi Delta fraternity established. In December 1970 Tau Phi Delta becomes a chapter of Sigma Pi.

Tau Delta Epsilon fraternity established. In 1971 Tau Delta Epsilon becomes a chapter of Sigma Nu.

Sigma Kappa Alpha sorority established. 
1970  Spartan Social Club fraternity established. In 1971 Spartan Social Club changes their name to Delta Kappa Sigma. In October of 1972 Delta Kappa Sigma becomes a chapter of Alpha Tau Omega.
1972  Alpha Sigma Tau closed. 

Sigma Kappa Alpha closed.
1974  Alpha Lambda Omega established.
1977  Sigma Pi closed. 

Alpha Lambda Omega closed.
1979      Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. established on April 20.
1980  Lambda Gamma Nu sorority established, on October 11, 1980 becomes a chapter of Delta Delta Delta.
1983   Delta Zeta closed.
1984   Sigma Pi is re-established. 

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. closed.
1985  Delta Zeta re-established.
1986   Archonian Club sorority established. In January of the 1989 Archonian Club becomes a chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
1987 Delta Rho fraternity established. In 1988 Delta Rho becomes a chapter of Kappa Delta Rho

Lambda Gamma Gamma sorority established. On November 5, 1988. Lambda Gamma Gamma becomes a chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta.

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is re-established.
1989   Lambda Phi Gamma sorority established. Lambda Phi Gamma becomes a chapter of Phi Mu on April 5, 1990.
1990  Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. closed.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is re-established in April.
1991   Lambda Beta Alpha sorority established. On April 4, 1992 Lambda Beta Alpha becomes a chapter of Kappa Delta.
1994   Sigma Tau Gamma closed.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. closed. 

Gamma Phi Omega International Sorority, Inc. is established on September 10. They are the first Latina sorority at Ball State University.
1996  Alpha Sigma Alpha closed.
1997    Sigma Pi closed.

Zeta Beta Tau established on November 22. They are the first Jewish fraternity at Ball State University.

Delta Delta Delta closed. 

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. re-established.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. re-established.
1999    Kappa Delta Rho closed.
2001 Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. closed.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. re-established.

Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) established on February 24. 

Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. colonizes.

Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. is dissolved.
2002 Alpha Tau Omega closed.
2003 Beta Theta Pi closed. 

Delta Chi closed.

2004  Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. closed.

2009    Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, Inc. colonizes. They are the first Latino fraternity at Ball State University.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is reactivated.

Alpha Tau Omega re-colonizes.

Delta Sigma Phi is dissolved.
2010 Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is reactivated.
  Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is reactivated.
Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity colonizes
   Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is inactive
 2012  Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a long-standing Ball State music fraternity, joins IFC.
   Gamm Rho Lambda Sorority, Inc. colonizes.
 2013  Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is reactivated.
   Pi Kappa Phi fraternity colonizes.
