Talking About Expectations

"I went home, and it was a bunch of rules, and my family wanted me to spend every moment together."

It's not unusual that your plans and expectations don't match the expectations your family may have when you return home for the semester break. The important thing to remember is to keep the lines of communication open during this time.

Before the break, talk to your parents about expectations for how the time will be spent so that both of you are aware of each other's plans and wishes. Your discussion should include:

  • what you want to do
  • what family expectations there are
  • whom you want to visit
  • how late you would like to stay out

It's good for all of you to communicate and create new living guidelines that not only support your newfound freedom and responsibility as an adult but also show respect and courtesy to the family.
