Early Start Program

Experience a college course with Early Start - a four-day, 1 credit hour seminar of your choice. Sponsored by University College, these dynamic seminars enable you to interact with other incoming freshmen as you explore various topics under the direction of our expert faculty.

To participate in this program, complete the online registration form and either pay online or mail your payment to the Office of Student Life, SC 133. Once you register and your payment is received, more information will follow. Payment and registration must be submitted by July 26, 2013. Seminar Options:

• A Multimedia Packed Personal Website Design Workshop: In this fun, hands-on workshop, students will have the opportunity to use the latest computer technology that Ball State University has to offer to design a multimedia packed personal website to publish and share with the world.  Students will also get to work with related technologies such as digital cameras, digital video, digital music files, and scanners.  This workshop is great for art and journalism, telecommunication, business, technology, and education majors.  Registration Cap: 20 for each session (40 total)

• Sex & Gender in the Media: Does playing video games cause violence in boys? Do reading fashion magazines lead to unhealthy eating habits among young girls? Find the answers to these questions and more when we examine how the media influences our interpretations and expressions of gender in the American society. Registration Cap: 25

• Television News: Students will learn the basics of television news. This workshop includes classroom instruction, a field trip to Indianapolis to watch a live TV newscast and a project in which students write, shoot and edit a news package. Students have the choice of anchoring, reporting, shooting or editing for the group. Registration Cap: 18

• Building Curriculum through Children’s Literature: Students will use children’s literature to learn to design curriculum. Although picture books will be used, the strategies learned can be generalized to any elementary school age group. This will be an active, hands-on experience. Registration Cap: 20  

• Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about College, but Were Afraid to Ask: You’ve seen movies about college and talked with others who have gone to college. You might think you know all about college, but we’re confident that there is more for you to learn before you start the fall semester. Let an expert address your college myths, answer all of your questions, and welcome you to the world of Ball State University. You’ll develop college-level study skills, discover how you learn best, and become familiar with the Ball State University campus and surrounding community. Registration Cap: 25

• The Amazing College R.A.C.E. (Resources to Acclimate to the College Environment): Learn how to face not only your freshman year, but your college career. Through team-building exercises, games, and other activities you will apply information gained in real college-life scenarios. Strategies to avoid potential barriers, obstacles and challenges of going to college will be discussed in this workshop. Registration Cap: 15  

• How to Get What You Want: The focus of this workshop is on goal setting and how to achieve goals for life, education, and career. Includes practical and effective communication skills needed to help achieve those goals. This is a fun and interactive workshop! Registration Cap: 24  

• Clueless? Maybe We can Help! A Workshop for Students Looking for a Major: In this workshop, students will begin the process of discovering a college major. This interactive workshop will help students through a variety of assessments to begin the academic major decision making process. Students will also learn general decision making strategies that can be used in other areas of academic life. Registration Cap: 25
