Building Better Communities
Community Development Course
September 21 - 23, 2009
The Community Development Course is a must attend for all community and economic developers! It is intensive, it is focused, it is interactive and it is hands-on! In three days, you will receive an educational experience that will boost your skills and knowledge to a new level. We will give you the tools and techniques essential to the practice of community development. Just like boot camp or basic-training, you will work hard and walk away with knowledge and skills to produce concrete results in your community.
The Community Development Course provides an excellent educational and networking opportunity for:
- full or part-time community development professionals with public, civic, or private development agencies
- experienced professionals seeking to update and expand their knowledge and skills
- government officials, community volunteers, and other community leaders
- professionals from the fields of planning, housing, community foundations, utilities, social services, and economic development
You will gain an understanding of the history, philosophy, and vocabulary associated with community development and have the opportunity to define "community" – its characteristics, your place in it, and its place in the global arena. This course covers trends, new approaches in economic development, and offers professional development along with a Ball State University certificate of completion.
The Community Development Course agenda includes:
- Defining community characteristics
- Community mapping exercise
- Community development in the new economy
- Use of data, data sources and resources
- Engaging the community
- Community trends and issues
- Community development career management
