Spanish At Work

Overall, the Spanish-speaking community in Indiana is the most rapidly growing segment of the state's population. Given the 117 percent increase in the Latino community from 1990-2000, Spanish-speaking residents will represent the leading minority group in Indiana within a few short years. To strengthen Indiana's workplace environment, Ball State University offers occupational Spanish language training for a variety of sectors.

Hispanics Now One-Seventh of U.S. Population:

One of every seven people in the United States is Hispanic, a number likely to keep going up because of immigration and a birth rate outstripping non-Hispanic African Americans and whites. There are 41.3 million Hispanics in the United States, the Census Bureau reported.

Statistics show:

      • Nationally, the Spanish-speaking community grew 9 percent from 2000-2002.
      • Indiana's Spanish-speaking community is the most rapidly growing segment of the state's population.
      • More than 19,000 new Hispanics have settled in Indiana in the last two years.
      • Some communities have seen a growth rate of more than 200 percent since the last census.
      • Some sectors are federally mandated to have bilingual translators on staff.
