Your are responsible for protecting your computer from viruses, spyware, and other malicious threats.

Antivirus

Perhaps the most important thing you can do is to run an updated antivirus program.  University Computing Services provides free antivirus protection to currently enrolled students and for university-owned computers.

Enable Your Firewall


Turning on the firewall within your operating system is a good way to protect your computer from unwanted network communication. This protects you from hackers and others that might try to access your computer from the network. The steps to turn on the firewall vary depending on your operating system.

Keep Your Operating System Updated

It is always a good idea to make sure your computer s running a version of the operating system that includes all the updates. These updates can include critical patches to protect you from the latest threats. 

Spyware Prevention and Removal

Spyware are small computer programs that can get installed on your computer when you are online. Running a spyware prevention and removal tool is an important thing to do to make sure your computer does not get infected with spyware. Both Spybot Search and Destroy and Windows Defender will protect Windows XP and Windows Vista machines. TechClips are available that explain how to download and use these programs.
