Music Technology

MusicTechnology Ball State’s music technology studios have placed our music technology program among the best and most advanced in the United States, attracting national attention in both the educational world and the professional world of audio recording.

With magnificent physical spaces and a sophisticated array of top-flight equipment, the music technology facilities allow the program to fully realize its educational goals, focusing on digital audio recording, music technology research, computer music, and composition. The studios enable Ball State’s School of Music  to professionally record music students, music faculty, and numerous small and large ensembles, including band, jazz, choral, and orchestral groups.

A focal point of our Music Instruction Building, the facility’s 11 recording studios—including digital audio workstations—are dedicated to computer music, composition, and recording technology, providing a remarkable range of choices for capturing true-to-life digital sound. Take an online tour of the music technology studios.

Some of the most innovative equipment—technologies that don't exist yet—could very well be invented by Ball State students, says music technology faculty member Keith Kothman.

“In terms of music technology, as computers become more ubiquitous, the functionality of the traditional mouse and keyboard wanes,” he says. “Our students aren't learning to simply push buttons on existing programs. They are working on developing new programs and interfaces that will help shape the future of electronic sound.”
