Carissa Buchholz has been named a winner of the 2008 Morris K. Udall Scholarship. Carissa, a natural resources and environmental management major, plans to pursue a career in the field of renewable energy. The campus president of Students for a Sustainable Campus, she is one of only 22 sophomores to be named a Udall Scholar this year. The Udall Scholarship is aimed at students who will pursue environmental issues or Native American tribal causes.

Sahba Charkhzarrin has been named a 2008-09 Barry M. Goldwater Scholar. He is one of 321 scholars selected from a field of 1,035 applicants nominated by colleges and universities nationwide. The Goldwater Scholarships are awarded to sophomores and juniors who plan to enter careers in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to $7,500.

Matthew Rooney has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Korea, where he will teach English to middle school or high school students for the next year. Matthew, an instrumental and general music education major, intends to use music as a means to help his Korean students improve their English language skills.

Justin Orr has been named a winner of the 2008 United States Navy Health Professions Scholarship. A biology and pre-dental major, Justin is one of 75 students nationwide to receive the full, four-year scholarship this year through the Navy's Medical and Dental Corps Program. Justin will enter the doctor of dental surgery program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City this fall, then pursue a career in the Navy.

Jessica Barnes has been named a winner of the 2009 Critical Language Scholarship, awarded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. State Department. The scholarship will take Jessica, a junior landscape architecture major, to Egypt this summer for two months of intensive language instruction in Arabic.
