Emerging Media Journalism

New York Times Knowledge Network logo
In conjunction with the New York Times Knowledge Network, Ball State University is offering four emerging media journalism courses designed to help working journalists and other professionals learn to use new technologies and to deliver compelling stories across a variety of media platforms.

These all-online, asynchronous courses are offered collaboratively by Ball State’s journalism and telecommunications programs, each of which have a long-established tradition and reputation for academic excellence. The programs are part of Ball State’s College of Communication, Information, and Media (CCIM), the seventh largest college of communication in the United States. CCIM is known for its evolving use of technology and digital content as well as the quality of its faculty, students, and programs.

Plus, Ball State’s leadership in emerging media and immersive learning experiences has earned it a place as one of the top innovators in the nation.

The courses can lead to an emerging media journalism certificate, or you can simply pick and choose the classes that best fit your needs.

Course Schedule
Four emerging media journalism courses will be offered beginning in January 2010:

Multimedia: Video (1 credit hour)
Learn how video enhances multimedia storytelling; shoot video using basic equipment such as mini-DV or point-and-shoot still cameras in video mode and edit with inexpensive or free software programs. This course is especially useful for reporters and photographers producing news video for Web sites for the first time.
Dates: January 18-February 26, 2010

Multimedia: Audio (1 credit hour)
Learn cost-effective approaches to capturing quality audio that can stand on its own or enhance the visual or written content of a news story. This course covers the latest in portable equipment, editing basics, podcasting, and voice-over techniques.
Dates: March 15-April 23, 2010

Multimedia: Stills (1 credit hour)
Learn about the role of still photography and its relationship to the multimedia storytelling process. This course covers how to get the great shot even if conditions are poor, simple techniques to optimize pictures on deadline, and strategies to integrate pictures into a story package.
Dates:
May 10-June 18, 2010

Multimedia: Design (1 credit hour)
Learn the basic principles of multimedia design, visual communication theory and practice, typography, color, layout presentation, and design history. The emphasis will be on the relationship between design and storytelling.
Dates: June 21-July 30, 2010

Faculty
The courses will be taught by faculty with many years of real-world professional and teaching experience. Learn more about them.
