Universities and other schools exchange data on the visa status of international students with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) using
Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
SEVIS allows accurate and current information about a student’s F-1 or J-1 status throughout his or her academic career in the United States. U.S. embassies and consulates also have access to SEVIS.
