Rights of New Members
As a potential new member and new member you have the right to:
Be treated as an individual.
Be yourself. Don't try to impress fraternities or sororities by being someone you're not; you
will wind up with a fraternity or sorority that's not quite the right fit for you.
Be fully informed about the recruitment process.
Ask lots of questions! Active members of an organization are always willing to answer
questions and tell you what you want to know. You shouldn't join a fraternity or sorority blindly.
Be treated with respect.
Make informed decisions without undue pressure from others.
Keep an open mind! Just because your friend or someone told you one fraternity or sorority is the best doesn't mean that it is for you.
Be fully informed about any binding agreements implicit in the preference card signing.
Have and express opinions to recruitment guides.
Have inviolable confidentiality when sharing information with counselors.
Use your own judgment. A fraternity or sorority that you may love may not be the best for your best friend, just like one that your best friend loves may not be the best for you. It's OK!
Make your own decision and accept full responsibility for the results of that decision.
Visit Meet the Greeks at the beginning of the semester.
Have a positive, safe, and enriching recruitment and new member experience.
As a potential new member you have the right to ask:
How much does it cost? Are there payment plans?
How big of a time commitment is membership in a fraternity or sorority?
Will my grades suffer if I go Greek?
What kind of events/activities do you do?
What are the differences between being Greek and not Greek?
What does being it mean to be a new member?
What do I have to do as a new member?
How is a fraternity or sorority different from any other on-campus organization?
What are the benefits of being Greek?
What kinds of leadership opportunities does your chapter offer?
