Raising the bar: Feedback welcome on NCAA self-study report

Topics: Administrative, Athletics

March 28, 2011

As part of the NCAA's certification process, Ball State University has completed a draft self-study report assessing how its intercollegiate athletics program is meeting national standards in a variety of administrative and academic areas.

The campus community is invited to review and comment on this draft report online at www.bsu.edu/ncaastudy. The public feedback period ends April 1.

Submitted comments will be considered by Ball State's NCAA Certification Steering Committee as a final report is prepared for submission to the NCAA by April 29.

The self-study report assesses Ball State's performance on seven NCAA operating principles, demonstrating how the athletics program has met these standards since its 2002 certification and how any deficiencies will be corrected. The operating principles cover the following areas:

  • governance and rules compliance (including institutional control, presidential authority and shared responsibilities)
  • academic integrity (including academic standards and support services)
  • gender and diversity issues (including five-year action plans for gender equity and antidiscrimination)
  • student-athlete well-being (including physical and educational welfare)

Information and feedback gathered through the self-study process will help Ball State renew its NCAA athletics certification, maintain integrity and high standards in the athletics program, identify strengths and opportunities to improve athletics operations, and enhance the overall experience of the university's student-athletes.

To complete the certification process, an independent peer review team will visit the campus in the fall to evaluate the athletics program on behalf of the NCAA. A certification decision will be publicly announced by April 2012.
