Spring semester academic recognitions at Ball State also include Truman Scholarship winner Megan Whitacre, '12, and Goldwater Scholarship recipients William Jay, '12, and Jennifer Strong, '12 — the first time in university history that two students have earned the Goldwater award in the same year.

Meanwhile, three soon-to-be Ball State graduates have secured Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships and will spend the summer in Colombia, Germany and Poland:

  • Wes Fribley, '11, is a German and telecommunications double-major from Goshen, Ind. The Honors College student and active member of Ball State's Digital Corps is headed for his assistantship in Germany.
  • Destined for Colombia is Andrew Kern, '11, a Spanish and sociology double-major from Bloomington, Ind. He is a former Marine Corps infantry squad leader who served two tours of duty in Iraq and now plans a career in the Foreign Service or law enforcement.
  • Lauren Petersen, '11, an urban planning and development major from Bluffton, Ind., will be teaching in Poland. She has served as a legislative intern with the Indiana General Assembly and in 2009 was selected both Miss Ball State and BSU Homecoming Queen.

Also, recent alumna Lydia Spotts, '08 — currently pursuing her master's degree in library and information sciences at Indiana University-Indianapolis — has received a Fulbright research grant to Germany, where she will analyze and chronicle the development and influence of Buchwissenschaft or "the study and knowledge of the book."  She is a past winner of Ball State's Joe and Carol Trimmer Award for Outstanding Senior Honors Thesis.

And Megan Hoppe, '11, a Fulbright finalist from Fishers, Ind., has been awarded a French Government Teaching Assistantship. Also an Honors College student, she plans a professional teaching career.
