Accreditation self-study heads into summer stretch

Ball State's work to secure continuing accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) will remain in high gear throughout the summer as a fall deadline approaches for the draft self-study report.

Members of the university's accreditation steering committee and subcommittees are busy analyzing data and writing the report that evaluates Ball State's mission, goals, programs and resources in light of quality standards established by the HLC, which is part of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

The initial self-study report will be available for public review and feedback in October. The final report must be completed before a peer review team's campus visit in 2013-14.

All faculty, staff and students are encouraged to participate in the process. Ball State's accreditation website, www.bsu.edu/accreditation, provides the self-study schedule, meeting minutes, committee members, contact information and HLC accreditation criteria, which were finalized in February.

"Writing the self-study is a learning experience for all the members of the steering committee and its subcommittees," said Michael Maggiotto, co-chair of the steering committee and dean of the College of Sciences and Humanities. "Only with input from all of the university's constituencies can the self-study relate accurately the breadth and depth of Ball State's story and demonstrate convincingly how transparently we hold ourselves accountable for our actions."

Five subcommittee reports to be completed this summer will concentrate on each of the HLC's criteria for institutional accreditation:

  • Mission
  • Integrity: Ethical and Responsible Conduct
  • Teaching and Learning: Quality, Resources and Support
  • Teaching and Learning: Evaluation and Improvement
  • Resources, Planning and Institutional Effectiveness

The subcommittee reports will be combined into a comprehensive self-study report that will assess Ball State's educational efforts, ensure its accountability and guide its plans for improvement across the university. The accreditation process provides Ball State an opportunity for self-reflection and dovetails with the development of a new strategic plan to guide the university through 2017.

Ball State last achieved a 10-year accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission in 2004.
