Ball State University's Arts Alive Concert Series for 2013-14 welcomes two award-winning ensembles and an acclaimed opera singer to Sursa Performance Hall.

The concert series begins Sept. 24 with a performance by the legendary Canadian Brass. This internationally famous ensemble has recorded more than 100 CDs and DVDs and has commissioned and transcribed numerous works for brass quintet. A reviewer for the Washington Post said, "These are the men who put brass music on the map: With their unbeatable blend of virtuosity, spontaneity and humor, they brighten the rosters of concert halls, international festivals and orchestra series throughout the world."

On Nov. 3, world-renowned classical group, The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble will perform. The group's style has been described by reviewers as "exemplary chamber playing … acutely responsive and rich in nuanced details. While they often offered big, thick sound and expressive intensity … they are capable of fleet delicacy and quiet lyricism."

The series' finale on April 17 will feature baritone Nathan Gunn, a native of South Bend, who has toured the world as a recitalist and opera singer. The New York Times said, "He brings all kinds of excellence to his work: musical intelligence, crisp rhythmic delivery and sensitivity to text, impressive acting skills and daring physicality."

Robert Kvam, dean of the College of Fine Arts, said the 10th season of Arts Alive programing promises to be a truly spectacular year of exceptional music-making.

"Our ticket prices are very competitive, for if this were a major metropolitan venue, the ticket prices would be appreciably more," Kvam said. "We hope our Ball State and Muncie communities take full advantage of this extraordinary season."

All concerts in the Arts Alive Concert Series are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $80 for the entire series and $35 for individual concerts. For more information, call Ball State's box office at 765-285-5581.
