Jessica Todd Harper: Photographs

|
Sybil with Georgette, 2006 Jessica Todd Hapter Photography Lent by artist |
Jessica Todd Harper's photographs are autobiographical in nature, with family, friends, and the artist herself serving as the subjects in large-scale color photographs. Harper's carefully composed backgrounds and her affinity for natural light in her compositions have given critics reason to compare her photographs to the paintings of the Dutch masters. "She takes photographs of family and friends, people who are meaningful to her, in ways that some might think are reminiscent of someone just wielding a camera and taking a snapshot," museum director, Peter Blume said. "But it really goes back to Vermeer, to the use of natural light and an examination of domestic interior." Harper was a winner of the Photolucida Critical Mass award for 2005. She is currently a visiting assistant professor at Swarthmore College. Visit the artist's
