Weisse Tasse (White Cup), 1972/2003 Hans Breder Gift of the Artist, 2010
|
Intermedia is a concept developed in the 1960s to describe art that combines elements of various disciplines. Examples of Intermedia include works of art involving both painting and theater, or sculpture and video. Hans Breder’s Weisse Tasse, 2003, occupies the artistic space between still photography and film, where the image of the white cup is a screen for the film as well as a container for the woman.
The film projected onto the cup was made by Breder in 1972 at the University of Iowa where he founded the first program to offer a degree in Intermedia. Beginning in 1968, he directed the program for over 30 years.
