The Transition to Teaching Program (TTT) in the Department of Elementary Education is designed for those who seek an Indiana teaching license but have earned a baccalaureate degree in another field of study.  The intensive 24-credit hour program combines online/distance learning with supervised teaching and field learning experiences. 

Coursework in TTT focuses on teaching methods, child development, and required math and literacy courses.  The program is developed for the highly motivated individual.  Guided field experiences are intended to expose students to best-teaching practices and to prepare them to serve all students effectively.

Courses required for completion of the program include the following:

EDEL 600       Introduction to Elementary Education (3 hrs)

EDPS 627       Child Development (3 hrs)

MATH 680      Special Studies in Teaching Math (3 hrs)

EDEL 644       Education in a Diverse Society (3 hrs)

EDRD 610      Teaching of Reading in the Elementary School (3 hrs)

EDRD 615      Early Literacy Development (3 hrs)

EDEL 626       Discipline and Classroom Management (3 hrs)

EDEL 690       Student Teaching (3 hrs)

Admission Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • GPA in an undergraduate baccalaureate program of 3.0 on a 4-point scale, both overall and in the major; or a  2.5 - 2.99 GPA based on a scale with 5 years experience in a  related field.  Students with a 2.5-2.99  GPA will be admitted on a probationary period for their first 9 hours of course work. 
  • A grade of B or better in the first nine hours in each of the following courses will be required:  EDEL 600, EDEL 644, and EDSP 627.
  • Passing scores on Core Academic Skills Assessment (CASA). Notice of acceptance into Ball State University's Graduate School

Application Packet Must Include:

  • Letter of application, including a personal statement addressing why you wish to become a teacher, why you should be selected for the TTT program, and how you will contribute to the profession.
  • A statement about your access to an education setting in order to practice teach with children.
  • Vita or resume, listing educational and job experiences
  • Three letters of reference from professional contacts who can attest to your abilities as a student and/or teacher.
  • Official transcripts (showing minimum 3.0 GPA).Original CASA score sheet

Upon review of the packet, the candidate will be interviewed, either online or in person, to determine his/her acceptance into the program.
