The purpose of this award is to recognize a graduate student for excellence in the creation of knowledge. An intra-university committee of faculty scholars select the winning project on the basis of its originality, significant contribution to knowledge, quality of writing, and potential for dissemination.

Candidates for the Alumni Association's Outstanding Creative Project may be nominated by any member of the graduate faculty at Ball State University.

The award recipient is recognized during Graduate Student Recognition Week and presented a plaque and monetary gift from the Alumni Association.
