Director of Athletics
Mark Sandy became Ball State University’s director of Intercollegiate Athletics in February of 2015. As director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Mr. Sandy provides leadership for athletic programs and activities that fully conform with institutional, MAC, and NCAA rules and guidelines. He directly supervises 19 Division I intercollegiate sports teams, all head coaches and the senior athletic department professional staff.
Prior to arriving at Ball State, Mr. Sandy spent the previous 10 years as director of athletics at Eastern Kentucky University. Under Mr. Sandy’s leadership at EKU, the Colonels won 32 Ohio Valley Conference championships and 12 OVC team sportsmanship awards. Eastern Kentucky earned the conference’s Commissioner’s Cup in 2014 and 2012, and the OVC Sportsmanship Award in 2010 and 2009. Mr. Sandy led Eastern Kentucky’s effort to create new branding, including images and a website, and significantly enhanced every athletic facility. Prior to Eastern Kentucky, Mr. Sandy served as senior associate athletics director for external operations at the University of Richmond for five years. From 1997 to 2000, Mr. Sandy served as associate athletics director at Miami University, where he was responsible for marketing and major gifts. He began his career as a high school mathematics and history teacher, in addition to coaching basketball and baseball, and went on to serve as an assistant basketball coach at the University of Evansville, Wake Forest University and Virginia Military Institute.
Mr. Sandy earned his baccalaureate at Concord College in West Virginia and a master’s degree from Lynchburg College, and he has taken doctoral classes at Virginia and EKU.
