There are as many definitions for branding as there are marketers. According to the American Marketing Association, a brand is a “name, term, sign, symbol, or design, or a combination of them intended to identify the goods and services of one seller or group of sellers and to differentiate them from those of other sellers.”

Another definition, the one we prefer to ascribe to, is that a brand “is a fine mist built on thousands of interactions aligned to create one powerful experience.” It is the sum total of all associations—both good and bad—that stakeholders attribute to your organization.

Ball State's Brand
Ball State University’s brand is determined by how people feel about Ball State, their experiences with the university, and their perceptions about the quality of the academics, athletics, and administration. The brand is played out in every interaction people have with Ball State—in a classroom, in administrative offices, in a publication, on a Ball State web site, in the news media, on the phone, anywhere.

Based on extensive research, Ball State has established a brand strategy to position the Ball State experiences as truly distinctive. Integral to the strategy is presenting a consistent message, tone, and graphic look in our communications. University Marketing and Communications works with units across campus to accomplish their communications goals and ensure efforts are aligned with the Ball State brand.

By consistently communicating the characteristics that make Ball State distinctive from other institutions in the stories we tell and maintaining consistency in the look of our marketing materials, we can enhance the experience people have with Ball State and raise their perceptions of the university, leading to more bright students, increased financial support, and affinity and influence that benefits the Ball State family.
