Urban Design Indianapolis

Urban Design Indianapolis was a public initiative to develop urban design guidelines for all new and substantially renovated development in downtown Indianapolis as called for by the Indianapolis Regional Center Plan 2020. The guidelines, adopted in 2008, provide a flexible roadmap for development downtown to facilitate a design review process that has been in place for decades without written standards.

The guidelines also developed a public input process for significant downtown projects, providing concerned citizens and community organizations with an opportunity to provide feedback regarding major projects for the first time.

CAP:IC facilitated explorative design workshops considering different parts of downtown and worked closely with the City of Indianapolis, Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, and the Urban Design Oversight Committee on the development, illustration, and production of the guidelines document. The project received a 2008 Hoosier Planning Award in the Excellence in Planning for Outstanding Project category.
