Research Interests

My general interests are in genome structure and function, including epigenetics; and bioinformatics from the whole organism level to the molecular level.

Specific Goals: Exploring two distinctly different areas of research that includes both plant and mammalian genetics, 1) genome structure and functional relationships, in prokaryotic, mammalian, and plant systems, and 2) population structures and dynamics of critically endangered breeds of equine through pedigree database development, research, and analyses with applications to the genetic analyses of human genealogical databases. The focus of the first goal is primarily directed towards the analysis of
agronomically and horticulturally important crops of the Gramineae and Orchidaceae, respectively, but has applications in other species. The second goal provides a means of analysis of economically important genetic traits in otherwise relatively homogeneous populations of more common breeds of equine.

In our research, we:

  • Perform genetics analyses on genomic and transcriptomic sequences of plant species to identify key genes associated with specific traits or functions.
  • Characterize changes in sequences through the development and use of genetic algorithms and comparative genome analysis software tools.
  • Develop genome analyses based on theoretical approaches to problems in genome structure and gene expression
  • Develop biocomputational algorthims through collaborative research for genomic research
  • Analyze data collections for patterns of inheritance in sub-population structures with limited heterozygosity.
  • Develop database structures through collaborative research for population genetic analyses
