I am the author of two books: Comeback Season (Free Press 2008), a non-fiction novel, and The Circus in Winter (Harcourt 2004), a fictional history of my hometown of Peru, Indiana. The Circus in Winter has been translated into German and Czech, was a finalist for the Story Prize, the Great Lakes Book Award, the GLCA New Writers’ Award, and has been adapted into a musical. My stories and essays have appeared many journals, magazines, and anthologies, and I contributed to Power and Identity in the Creative Writing Classroom: The Authority Project, one of the first books on creative writing pedagogy. I regularly write about my teaching and writing at my blog, The Big Thing.
