Online and Distance Education: National Rankings and Recognitions

It’s certainly true that Ball State University’s main campus programs have earned a multitude of national rankings and recognitions, and that same commitment to quality and best practices carries over into our online and distance programs.

In fact, many of the following rankings relate to both our online and main-campus offerings.

Online and Distance Education

  • In 2016, Ball State is the first higher education institution in the country to earn Learner Support Program Certification for its online programs. The honor is given by Quality Matters (QM), a leading quality assurance organization for online education. It recognizes online programs that provide all the critical student and academic services needed for learner success and use learner feedback to continuously improve those services. 
  • Winner of the 2014 Excellence in Institution-Wide Online Education Award from the Online Learning Consortium (formerly the Sloan Consortium).
  • Awarded the 2014 Strategic Innovation in Online Education Award for meeting strategic and innovative goals for online education. This award is the highest distinction given by UPCEA, an association of leaders in online education.
  • Is top-ranked for best online bachelor's degree programs by U.S. News & World Report. 
  • Earned four rankings, including three in the top 10, from U.S. News & World Report in its list of Best Online Programs for Veterans
  • Named a Military Friendly School for the past five years―placing us in the top 20 percent of all schools nationwide. Our main campus and Miller College of Business have also received this honor.
  • Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.


  • Ball State's Miller College of Business is among only 15 percent of business schools accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International)—considered the gold standard in business school accreditation.
  • In U.S. News & World Report's  2016 Top Online Programs rankings, our online MBA was ranked 12th.
  • U.S. News ranked our online graduate business programs No. 6 for “Best Online Programs for Veterans.”


  • Ball State graduate educator-preparation programs placed 11th in the nation in the 2016 U.S. News & World Report's ranking of best online graduate education programs and No. 2 for “Best Online Programs for Veterans.”
  • All Teachers College education programs are fully accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the Higher Learning Commission, and the Indiana Professional Standards Board. In addition, 23 programs have received national recognition through their respective professional associations.
  • Ball State Teachers College is in the top 25 in the nation for number of nationally recognized educator preparation programs it offers.
  • Our course sequence in Applied Behavior Analysis has been approved by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, Inc.
  • Our educational leadership programs were ranked 20th in the nation by Leadership Excellence magazine. The programs have been ranked since 2005.


  • Ball State graduate nursing programs placed 23rd in the nation in the 2015 U.S. News & World Report's ranking of best online graduate education programs.
  • U.S. News ranked our online graduate nursing programs No. 4 for “Best Online Programs for Veterans.”

Public Relations

  • Our master’s degree in public relations is the only graduate program in the nation to receive Certification in Education for Public Relations (CEPR) by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).
